Comment on “Home schools rise in China” (China Daily website, September 05)
The benefits of home-schooling actually outweigh the benefits of formal public schooling if done properly. Home-schooling fosters creativity rather than rote memorization. Breaks can be utilized as a reward system. Difficult subjects can be more easily understood because students aren't afraid to ask their parent for help in understanding the work. Parents can also guide students to find the answers on their own.
One downside that doesn't seem to work very well in Chinese home-schooling, however, is that one parent must be at home to be able to monitor and guide the student. It isn’t very practical in a society where it is common to see both parents working.
