Comment on "Hu's visit to strengthen Sino-Cambodian ties"(China Daily, March 27)
Stronger and deeper ties between China and its Southeast Asian neighbors are good for the region as a whole. China's cultural relationships with the Mekong nations should be strengthened and given greater emphasis and impetus. Frequent people-to-people exchanges among these countries will strengthen bonds and promote mutual trust. China's border regions of Guangxi, Guangdong and Yunnan should promote their cultural commonalities and differences with Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Apart from such cultural bonding, it is also important to help local people preserve their history and historical heritage. People from these areas have to appreciate and support cultural values beyond monetary benefits. A successful formula like this can be applied to other neighboring countries and foster better multilateral relations.
