Should Chinese care about "face"?

I think that fear of losing "face" is a problem for many people. But many of us are not aware of how much we care about "face" i.e. about what others think, may think, or thought of us. Yet, we may see it as a good thing if a potential robber does not rob, because he cares about his face. But essentially he's still a robber. The problem is that a lot of people without having any intention "to rob" are too concerned about their image in other people's eyes.
