Parents should guide their children, not direct them. Observe where your child's aptitude and interests lie, and then encourage them in those directions. By 'guide', I mean to assist in the choice of direction, based upon the child's interests and abilities; as opposed 'directing' in the sense of deciding, as a parent, what one would like one's child to be, and then putting that child onto a path that leads to that specific end.
