Comment on "Should children be raised by their grandparents?" (China Daily website, Sept 2)
My son stayed with his grandparents when he was 1 year old. Although he came back to us when he was 2 years old to go to kindergarten, this is the thing I regret the most. I'm grateful for his grandparents' help. But they were so indulgent that they gave in to his demands all the time. This was very bad for him.
I think many of young parents share the same opinion with me. But the fact is that young couples need to work, and they need someone to take care of their children during the day, especially when they are under the age of 3.
There is another phenomenon, when one of the grandparents, usually the grandma, temporarily moves to stay with the young family for help. The elder couple has to separate for quite a long time, when one of them hasn't retired yet, or grand-grand parents need someone to take care of. This is so unfair for the grandparents, and they always sacrifice a lot for their children. I think we need public day care centers to solve the problem.
