Do reality TV shows do more good than harm?

Here in the US, reality shows came about because the Hollywood writers went on strike. No one writes any good plots for sit-coms or dramas, so some wise guy came up with the idea for reality shows. I don't like any of them, except Britain's Got Talent. The rest of them are not reality, just situations scripted to vaguely seem like reality. I don't like that they've replaced a lot of quality TV shows.
