Luoyang has a long history of peony planting. Dating back to Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-581), people began to grow peonies in Luoyang. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907), peonies gained popularity in imperial gardens and were planted on a massive scale. In the Song Dynasty (960-1270), Luoyang peony cultivation skills matured and the city became the center of peony planting.
