器官捐献在线登记(qìguān juānxiàn zàixiàn dēngjì): Online registration for organ donations
The Medicare platform of Alipay, the payment system of China's e-commerce giant Alibaba, introduced a registration system for organ donations on Thursday.
Managed by the China Organ Transplantation Development Foundation under the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the system makes it very easy for people to register as organ donors.
A recent joint survey by the foundation and several online platforms showed that 83 percent of respondents were willing to become voluntary organ donors.
But in reality there is a serious shortage of donated organs in China. According to Huang Jiefu, president of China Organ Transplantation Development Foundation, millions of Americans have signed up as organ donors, while in China there are only 80,000 so far.
Many respondents of the survey said they don't know how to become an organ donor and the application procedures are complicated. Registering to become an organ donor can be a time-consuming process that involves many type of personal information.
Alibaba's convenient new online registration channel indicates China's organ donor cause has stepped into the Internet Plus era, and it is expected to encourage more Chinese people to become organ donors.
Registration online only indicates an intention to donate, and the public can cancel their registration at any time.
