Should bride prices be abolished?

Maybe I'm just too American, but all I see from this is greed. How is this face-saving?

Also, how is it showing that the men cherish their daughters by most likely putting the couple into debt before they are even married?

Help me understand this, please. All I can see is greed on the part of the girls' families. They're playing on the fact that there are fewer women than men now in China due to the Only Child policy and taking advantage of market dynamics from what I can see.
