语言欺凌 (yǔyán qīlíng): Verbal abuse
According to the Chinese Campus Bullying Investigation Report jointly issued by the Center for Social Risk and Public Crisis Management at Nanjing University and the Social Risk Research Center at Central South University, verbal abuse is the main form of bullying on campus in China, accounting for 23.3 percent of bullying behavior.
In 2016, the State Council, China's Cabinet, clearly pointed out that bullying on campus includes deliberate verbal assaults.
Compared with physical violence, verbal abuse may seem to be "soft violence". But it can harm its victims just as much as physical bullying. Verbal abuse aims to undermine the victims' dignity and confidence, which may cause serious psychological problems.
The verbal abuse on campus does not always come from students. In many cases, some teachers also target verbal abuse at students, which sets a bad example.
To effectively solve the problem of verbal abuse on campus, we should first make students aware of the psychological harm it may cause and the significance of respecting others and protecting themselves and others.
