Historic building demolished overnight

Two excavators work overnight to demolish two historic buildings built in 1940s in Guangzhou city, South China's Guangdong province, June 11, 2013. One of the old buildings used be a residence of the famous Cantonese opera artist Xue Juexian (1904-1956). They were labeled as historic in last year's evaluation, with the necessity to be preserved. "It is a great pity to know such building featuring the city's chrematistics were demolished," said Cui Zhimin, a cultural relics expert in Guangdong province. A lot of buildings built during the period of 1911-1949 were toppled down in recent years, witnessing a gradual extinction of Guangzhou's history and culture, said Xue. [Photo/CFP]
