Highway maintenance team on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Five members of a 12-member road maintenance team at 4,889 meters altitude on Que'er Mountain in Southwest China's Sichuan province, Oct 15. From left to right are Zeng Shuangquan, the team head, Yang Chaoxiang, Lai Zhiming, Liu Xiaogang and Wang Yong. The fifth road maintenance team under Dege County Road Management Bureau is located along the 317 State Highway in Dege county in Garze Tibetan autonomous prefecture, in the western Sichuan province. The team is stationed at the highest position among all road maintenance teams along the 317 State Highway. The team members' major job is to maintain a 10-kilometer section of the highway, mostly involving breaking open the road blocked by snowstorms, snowslides, landslides or rain-triggered mudslides to restore traffic, and rescuing and accommodating stranded passengers. If there are no road closures, geological or climate disasters, the workers collect and load stones to pave the impaired parts of the road, and cover them with dirt, so as to make the road less bumpy.
