Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone

Hohhot Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved as state-level deveopment zone in July 2000. The zone now has a developed area of 9.1 square kilometers.

Geographic Location
Hohhot Economic & Technological Development Zone (HETDZ) lies at the outskirt of Hohhot, capital city of Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. In Mongolian, Hohhot means "Green city". HETDZ is located in the western part of the economical ring around Bohai Bay. Within its radius of 500 kilometers there are 10 metropolises with populations over 1 million. HETDZ is about 500 kilometers from Beijing, 800 kilometers from Tianjin Port, and 100 kilometers from Zhun'ger coalfield.

Climate
Hohhot is in the Northwestern continental climate, with no severe coldness in winter, nor scorching hotness in summer. The average temperature all the year is around 6 centigrade, and the annual rainfall about 350-500 milimeters.

Communication and Transportation
Road

Hohhot is one of the communication centers in Northwest China close to 3 national highways, among which No. 110 is the main artery connecting Beijing, the capital city and the Great Northwest China Region. And Hohhot-Baotou expressway has been put into use already. Moreover, an expressway to Beijing is going to be built soon.

Railway
Hohhot is linked to the national railway networks by Beijing-Baotou and Beijing-Lanzhou lines. There are passenger trains directly to Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Yinchuan, lanzhou, Nanjing, and Ningbo, and international through trains to Ulan Bator and Moscow.

Airport
Hohhot Baita Airport is merely 5 kilometers away from HETDZ. At present, there are 48 civil routes to metropolises across the country, and 2 international routes to Ulan Bator, capital of Mongolia. Besides irregular chartered flights started to shuttle between Hohhot and Hong Kong , and between Hohhot and Tokyo via Shanghai.

Natural Resources
The area surrounding the Zone abounds in natural resources. Within the range of 200 square kilometers, there are tremendous reserves of metal and nonmetal resources. The nonmetals include coal, kaolin, rare earth, graphite, mica, and quartz; and the metals of over 100 kinds cover iron, cuprum, zincum, and so on. So far, there are 170 mines identified, and the reserve for rare earth ranks the first in the world. The area also possesses rich farm and livestock resources such as animal hide, fur, down, milk, meat, and grass, and it also possesses fine-quality natural herbs such as buckthorn, licorice, codonopsis pilosula, lily, and astragalus membranaceus. In addition, ground water here is in excellent quality.

Human Resources
In Hohhot there are 124 scientific research and design institutions of various categories, and 9 universities and colleges which account for 80 percent of higher education schools in the Autonomous Region.

Industrial Structure
In HETDA, a relatively complete industrial structure has now taken shape with the following industries as the mainstay, namely, dairy product processing, biomedicine, electronic information, new type materials, green food, fine chemistry, machinery, and textile industry. And in it hi-tech production takes the leading position.

Investment Priorities
Green food processing represented by dairy production; electronic information industry; valuable metals refining and purification and jewelry processing; biomedicine and special medicine production; comprehensive use of local fur and down, meat, wild medicine, and rare earth through modern high-technology; developing the road, water supply, heating, sewage disposal, and large plot estate exploitation.
