An unlicensed cabbie in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, was fined 9,000 yuan ($1,314) by the authorities for charging exorbitant fares to his passengers.

A British couple took the taxi from Huashan to Xi'an on Sunday afternoon and were charged 300 yuan, much higher than the normal price for the trip. The driver even refused to send them directly to their hotel after arriving in Xi'an.

The couple quarreled with the driver and attracted the attention of local taxi management inspection officials.

The unlicensed driver was fined according to relevant regulations before inspection officials sent the couple to their destination.
