A smartly-dressed young man who begged for cash on a street in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, turned out to be a conman.

The man, who donned a business suit, brand-name glasses and shiny shoes, squatted outside a cinema in Xinjiekou, a busy commercial area, and told onlookers he was a businessman from Shenzhen, Guangdong province.

He claimed his wallet had been stolen shortly after arriving in Nanjing and that he needed 300 yuan ($43) to buy a return train ticket.

Several generous people gave him cash before a reporter asked why he did not go to the police. He fled after claiming he needed to use a toilet.
