The first mainland ocean teaching-training vessel set sail for Taiwan on Friday from the northeastern port city of Dalian. Yukun, one of the most advanced vessels of its kind in the world, is carrying 160 teachers and students from Dalian Maritime University for a seven day visit. “It marks a new start for the exchange and cooperation in shipping education between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait,” said Wang Zuwen, president of Dalian Maritime University, at the departure ceremony. During the visit, the teachers and students will communicate with their counterparts at the National Taiwan Ocean University and National Kaohsiung Marine University. Agreements are expected to be made to promote further cooperation in education and scientific research.
The century-old Dalian Maritime University has had good relationships with the two universities and other institutions of Taiwan’s shipping community. So far, 116 postgraduates and 40 undergraduates in the university have benefited from scholarships granted by Taiwan’s Kwang-Hua Education Foundation, while six Taiwanese students have acquired master’s degrees or doctorates from Dalian Maritime University.
