Varying water quality in Yunnan highland lakes

Updated: 2009-06-08 17:22 The water quality of nine highland lakes in Yunnan province is different from lake to lake, it was revealed at the 2008 Yunnan Environmental Condition News Conference. The conference, held by the Yunnan Environmental Protection Bureau, coincided with Environment Protection Day on June 5. Sixty-three lakes and reservoirs in Yunnan province were tested. Among those, the lakes which reached Grade levels I-II accounted for 31.7%, level III 36.6%, level IV and V both 9.5% and below level V accounted for 12.7%. Yunnan invested 1.908 billion yuan to manage the nine lakes in 2008, with 1.5 billion yuan going to Dianchi Lake and the remaining to the other eight lakes. As of the end of 2008, total investment in the management of the nine lakes amounted to 11.302 billion yuan, with Dianchi Lake costing 7.732 billion yuan alone.
