Heavy rain triggers floods in north China

HOHHOT - Heavy downfalls have triggered floods in Arun Banner, Hulun Buir League of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, causing damage to houses and crops.

More than 100 trapped people have been rescued, local authorities said Friday.

An avalanche of water and mud had marooned about 100 households around 2 pm Thursday. Rescuers with diggers arrived at the scene after being notified of the emergency just after 7:30 pm.

The heavy rain which started Thursday afternoon, had ceased early morning Friday -- leaving around one meter of flood water.
