CHENGDU - Sichuan has become the largest province in western China in terms of greed food production since it started developing the sector in the early 1990s, according to Zhu Chunxiu, deputy chief of the provincial department of agriculture.

Sichuan began the development of the green food sector simultaneously with other parts of the country in the early 1990s.

It is home to 245 green food producing enterprises with 972 green food products. Its green food bases covers more than 1 million hectares.

Its green food production ranks first in western China and seventh nationwide, Zhu says.

At the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15), Sichuan will have more than 1,300 green food products and its green food bases will surpass 1.2 million hectares, she says.

In recent years, some incidents involving food safety have occurred in the country. But Sichuan's green food has withstood the test and there has not been any incident involving its green food quality and safety, the deputy chief says.

Not a single case of Clenbuterol or Melamine has been found in the provincial sampling of the green food, she adds.

According to Zhou Nanhua, chief of the Sichuan Provincial Green Food Development Center, some fake green food has been found in the market.

Earlier this year, one farm produce maker in Renshou county and the other in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture were found to be involved in the production of seven types of fake green food.

They have been ordered to stop production, Zhou says.

His center will step up inspection and impose penalties ranging from two to five times of the sales of fake green food on violators, Zhou says.
