The water environment of the Wenjiang district in Chengdu, Sichuan province, has improved considerably thanks to a scheme to treat water pollution.
The district abounds in water resources as rivers crisscross it. Its annual average water resources register 125 million cubic meters and its residents’ per capita water resources 319 cubic meters.
The district uses groundwater for industrial production and daily consumption while its water for agriculture and environmental protection comes from the time-honored Dujiangyan Irrigation Project.
Coupled with booming economic development is the potential shortage of water resources.
To cope with the situation, the district has become one of the first in Sichuan to build an underground water monitoring system, according to district Party chief Tian Rong.
It also has restorted to treatment of industrial waste and sewage as well as other pollution control measures.
As a result, its wate environment has improved greatly, she says.
