Chengdu will began work on five intelligent traffic systems in early April, the Municipal Transport Commission has reported.

In fact, the city has always paid a great of attention to transportation, but is working to become a core economic growth area for the west, so it has a strategy for vitalizing the city in five ways, and, transportation is the first item in the strategy.

The five intelligent traffic systems include intelligent traffic control on the 3rd Ring Rd, a traffic flow video system for the urban arteries, a video monitoring system, traffic accident detection system, and traffic guidance system.

Work on the system is expected to be completed by the end of June. When it’s finished, there will be about 100 traffic guidance screens in the downtown area providing information on traffic conditions and traffic accidents in real time. The 3rd Ring Rd will also have intelligent traffic controls to help drivers and make the city an important transportation hub.

Chengdu will build another system above the intelligent traffic system, with five functions: comprehensive control, data analysis, information, traffic simulations, and handling emergencies. This will help solve congestion problems, help with traffic diversions, make better use of road resources, maximize intelligence, and provide an integrated traffic hub for western China.

Several parts of the integrated control system will be finished by the end of June, and the basic framework of the system is expected to be completed by the end of December.
