Chengdu's High-Tech Zone is planning on giving its mobile Internet business a boost by turning it into an industrial cluster valued at 200 billion yuan ($31.7 billion) within 5 years, local officials said at a news conference, June 27.
According to the Management Committee of the Chengdu High-Tech Zone, it will develop more than 1,000 Internet enterprises and bring in about 100,000 professionals over the next five years.
Zone revenues in the mobile applications and services sector will account for 50 billion yuan of that 200 billion, or about a quarter of the expected total.
The zone will also establish a special fund to support its plan, with an initial 1 billion yuan, although that is expected to increase yearly depending on the need.
The Chengdu High-Tech Zone ranks fourth nationwide in overall strength, and has become a core area of mobile Internet activity, with more than 150 enterprises fully involved in it, and accounting for 90 percent of Chengdu's total.
