An international symposium on social network analysis hosted by the Institute for Empirical Social Sciences Research of Xi'an Jiaotong University was held on Friday in Xi'an, capital of Northwest Shaanxi province.

It is the first time that such a symposium sponsored by the International Network for Social Network Analysis (INSNA) was held outside Europe and the United States since the INSNA was established in 1977. The meeting in Xi'an attracted international friends and social network analysis experts from more than 20 countries and regions.

During the four-day meeting, some 450 Chinese and foreign experts will discuss and exchange research achievements in the fields of social network analysis including sociology, management, political science, psychology, journalism, mathematics, statistics, computer science and other research areas.

The INSNA is the professional association of social network analysis. The rapid increase in awareness of social networks, social network software, and social networking has led to lively discussions and influence beyond sheer numbers.
