Performance Information La traviata is a three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on Alexandre Dumas’s 1848 novel The Lady of the Camellias. The opera received its world premiere in on March 6, 1853 at the Teatro la Fenice.
One of the three most popular operas by Verdi (the other two being Rigoletto and Il trovatore), La traviata remains popular among Italian opera fans even today. This opera is filled with melodious arias (similar to the number of "great hits" in Bizet’s Carmen). Even those people who cannot follow every detail of the plot development would still enjoy the sumptuous scoring and lyrical melodic turns. In many ways, La traviata is a great "first" opera for those new to the art form.
