In recent years, China has actively boosted the development of Chinese smart cities. The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development released an announcement and two documents in 2012 about pilot national smart cities.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development released the list of pilot cities for 2013 on August 8, selecting 103 cities (including districts, counties and towns) as 2013’s national smart cities. Together with the previously-announced first batch of 90 cities, China now has 193 pilot smart cities.
According to Zhang Shunmao, president of the markets and solutions department , the smart cities of the future have four features: assembling and sharing information, universal broadband, barrier-free communication, and convenient city life and data security.
Smart cities are necessary for the state, said Wang Biyu, chief engineer of the Center of Smart Cities of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. He mentioned that construction of a smart city requires the investment of 8 to 12 billion yuan ($1.31-1.97 billion), which will have a positive influence on local information, water conservancy and infrastructure industries.
IDC predicts that in the next years the investment to the construction of smart cities will rapidly grow. The IT market of smart cities will reach 130.11 billion yuan by 2017.
