The Shanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu high-speed rail line began operations on Tuesday.

The high-speed line passes through four provinces and two municipalities, connecting Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hefei, Nanjing and Shanghai. The travel time between Chengdu and Shanghai has been cut from 20 hours to 15.

The line stretches for 2,078 kilometers, making it the second longest in China's high-speed rail network. Trains reach speeds of between 200 km an hour to 350 km an hour.

It is the fastest railway corridor linking China's southwestern regions to the central and eastern regions.
