Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region, is the largest city in Western China and possibly the largest in Central Asia, with some excellent scenery in nearby Heavenly Lake and South Pasture.
Tianchi Lake in Tianshan Tianchi National Park is a scenic highlight about 1.5 to 2 hours out of Urumqi. It is a small lake in high mountains.
Kebabs can be found in the streets and bazaars throughout Xinjiang. Chunks of mutton are strung on a skewer and roasted over charcoal.

Urumqi is in the central northern Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region, which makes up Northwest China. Urumqi Diwopu International Airport is about 20 kilometers north of the center of the city.
Urumqi is linked with most of the major cities throughout China via air. Daily connection to main tourist cities such as Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Guilin are available.
