Efforts in quake relief

Seven Nepali students in Shanghai helped collect medical supplies for their home country’s earthquake relief, the Chinanews.com reported on May 6.

A 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit central and western parts of Nepal on April 25. The death toll has jumped to 7,675 as of May 6 and more than 14,500 were injured, according to the country's Home Ministry.

Seven Nepali students who are doing internship in the spine surgery department of Shanghai Oriental Hospital decided that one of them should return to their home country to aid victims and do psychological counsel.

The idea was supported by the hospital. Its emergency rescue team donated 1,000 disposable hats, 1,000 masks and 1,000 pairs of gloves, which the student took back to Nepal and donated to hospitals in Kathmandu. Other students were busy preparing to retun to Nepal to offer medical help.

Shanghai international students offered a helping hand, too. On April 30, the International Students Association of Donghua University initiated a donation for Nepal earthquake victims. It raised a total of 12,390 yuan ($76,869), which will be donated to the affected area through the Red Cross Society of China.

China has sent a total of seven medical and rescue teams. By Sunday, the three medical teams had diagnosed 2,234 people, treated 969 people, trained 714 medical staff members and helped the Nepalese to formulate a post-disaster health and epidemic prevention plan. Three helicopters from China’s air force flew to Nepal on May 6 to help with transportation and rescue, according to Xinhua News Agency.
