Qingdao is located in the southern tip of Shandong Peninsula (between north latitude 35°35' to 37°09' and east longitude 119°30' to 121°00'), looks out to the Yellow Sea and faces South Korea as well as Japan across the sea. It today has direct jurisdiction over 7 districts (Shinan-qu, Shibei-qu, Sifang-qu, Licang-qu, Laoshan-qu, Huangdao-qu and Chengyang-qu) and 5 county-level cities (Jiaonan-shi, Jiaozhou-shi, Jimo-shi, Laixi-shi), with the total area of 10,654 square kilometers, among which 1159 square kilometers of urban area. There are 8,4561 million permanent residents including 3.4745 million urban residents and 7,6156 million registered permanent residents including 2,7625 million urban ones.

Qingdao city is the most significant seaport of eastern China, the China’s economic center, one of the first batch of coastal open cities in China, the special city under the regulations of the state, the sub-provincial city as well as China's marine scientific research center.

It is home to Sailboat, as the host city for the 29th Olympic Sailing Regatta in 2008 and the 13th Paralympics Sailing Regatta.

It is noted as China’s excellent tourist city, the renowned historical and cultural city, the national civilized city, the national sanitary city, the national garden city, the national water-efficient city and the National Environmental Protection Model City.
