U.S. first lady Michelle Obama and her two daughters spent some time touring the remains of the ancient city walls in Xi'an in March 2014. They also visited the famous terracotta warriors and Shaanxi History Museum.
The city’s wall is one of the oldest and best preserved in China and was one of the largest ancient military defense systems in the world.
The construction of Xi'an's first city wall began in 194 BC and lasted for four years. Construction on the existing wall started in the Ming Dynasty in 1370 and encircles 14 square kilometers of the city. The City Wall has 18 gates, which are open for visitors to ascend the wall.
