More than 15,000 civil servants in Taizhou of Jiangsu province have been visiting local residents and companies since December 2016, to further understand the concerns of locals and help solve issues impacting daily life, according to a symposium held on Jan 18.

Officials will be introducing policies relating to improving people’s lives to citizens during their visits. They must leave their contacts details with residents that they visit, offering locals direct access to government services and promoting interaction between the government and citizens.

"It's not a mere gesture but a long-term and challenging task as each Party member has to keep abreast of people's demands and handle more problems as far as possible by regularly visiting their homes and learn of their needs," said Zhao Ronghua, an official of Taizhou authority.

The government officials who were divided into 100 groups have so far visited 18,500 businesses and some 1.5 million households during weekends, collecting more than 29,000 items of feedback and dealing with over 15,000 problems in various fields, such as infrastructure construction and employment.

Officials have also begun a new round of door-to door services from Jan 18 to 24, introducing preferential policies and delivering average subsistence allowances to households of around 600 yuan ($87.26) each.
