Single-day passenger flow sets record at Pudong Airport

Shanghai Pudong International Airport witnessed a passenger flow of 100,000 on July 13, setting a record for a single-day’s passenger numbers since the airport opened, and also the highest passenger throughput in all of China’s airports.

Two factors contributed to the increase in passengers: with the upcoming summer holiday, students and family tours increased significantly, with the average daily passenger flow remaining at about 80,000 for those days. In addition, because of a thunderstorm on July 12, 294 passenger and cargo flights were delayed and 41 cancelled, and the travel plans of about 63,000 travelers were affected.

Shanghai airport quickly activated a preplanned mechanism to keep the customs clearance running smoothly. They also arranged for police to work ahead of time. According to statistics, there were more than 450 policemen at Shanghai airport’s checkpoints, and a lot of them worked for more than 24 hours. The checkpoints handled passengers scientifically and made maximum effort to keep queuing passengers moving.

Since the World Expo in Shanghai, Pudong International Airport’s entry and exit flow has continued to grow, with an annual average passenger throughput exceeding 22 million. Especially over the past three years, the entry and exit passenger flows have surged, with an increase of 15,000 daily passengers over that in 2010.
