The 3D animation "Up" will make cinematic history when it opens this year's Cannes International Film Festival on May 13, AFP reported Thursday.

The world premiere of "Up" will make the film the first-ever animated feature and first 3D film to open the prestigious festival.

"We are happy to have 3D open Cannes, as it is one of cinema's upcoming adventures," AFP quoted the festival's spokesman Thierry Fremaux as saying.

"Up", an adventure set in the wilds of South America due for release at the end of May, is a cooperation between multiple Oscar nominee Pete Docter, who also directed "Monsters, Inc." and wrote "WALL-E", and Bob Peterson, writer of "Finding Nemo" and "Ratatouille".

The official line-up for the Golden Palm, the top honor at Cannes, will be announced on April 23.

The 62nd Cannes festival runs from May 13 to 24.
