Where the wild things are

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2008 Exhibition kicks off in Beijing today with nearly 100 images of some of the world's most endangered species.

The world's most prestigious wildlife photography competition is run annually by the Natural History Museum of the United Kingdom in London as well as the BBC's Wildlife magazine.

Since its launch in 1964, it has attracted the participation of thousands of the world's professional and amateur wildlife photographers. Last year's competition had more than 32,000 entries from 82 countries. Renowned Chinese wildlife photographer Xi Zhinong, who won an award at the competition in 2001, initiated the world-wide exhibition's first leg in China.
