Journey to the Silk Road - Sri Lanka

From Sube, in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Kandy is situated in central province of Sri Lanka. It is one of most beautiful city in Sri Lanka and has more than 1000 years of a greatly written history. It was the last kingdom of our country when it was captured into British empire. The city is a major tourist attraction and it is one of greatest holy place for Buddhists all around the world as the tooth relic of Buddha is kept in a palace-like temple called "Temple of Tooth Relic". If you visited this city, Temple of Tooth Relic should be your top priority and if you planed to visit Kandy in August you will experience the annual festival of the Temple, including a colorful and breathtaking procession of Esala. The botanical garden, Hanthana mountain, Sarasavi Uyana railway station (famous due to beauty of it), Milk lake (Kiri muhudha) are some of other important places in the City of Kandy.

Staying in Kandy has lot of choices, it is listed on major hotel websites so you can select your option. But if you got plenty of money, I recommend the historical hotel of the city, Queen's. It is an ancient hotel which is strictly monitored by UNESCO World heritage programme. An evening in this wonderful hotel will be an unforgettable experience for life. If you think about buying things from my home town, gemstones are the wise selection. Although Kandy is not famous for gem deposits, this city is the best choice to buy gemstones, specially Ceylon blue sapphires. There are several decent gem dealers put up palatial gem centers, where you can be freely educated about colored stones in their lecture rooms and then buy gems without hassles of annoying vendors and danger of getting cheated. Tea, batthik cloths, wood carvings and handicrafts are also best choices if you think about buying things from my hometown.
