Beijing Security personnel have vowed to ensure the peaceful holding of two major sport events -- softball and athletics -- in the Chinese capital in August.

About 300 people took part in a meeting in Beijing on Wednesday to pledge efforts for security at the International Softball Federation (ISF) XI Women's World Championship and the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Junior Championships.

Yu Hongyuan, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Security Bureau told the attendees that the upcoming events are of great significance to verifying the achievements of the first-stage security work, fine-tuning security coordination system and resolving any problem that may be found in the run-up to the 2008 Olympic Games.

He urged the security personnel to be aware of the situation and responsibility and to explore an Olympic security mode which is in line with China's conditions and the international practice as well as the Olympic security requirements.

Representatives of the Chaoyang and Fengtai police substations, the 15th detachment of Beijing Armed Police as well as security guards and volunteers took the chance to express their readiness to deliver excellent performance for the security mission.

The softball event will be held from August 27 to September 5 at Fengtai Softball Field, with some 1,500 participants from 16 teams. The top four finishers at the tournament will qualify for the Olympic softball competition to take place in August 2008 at the same venue. The athletics event will be staged from August 15 to 20 when some 2,000 athletes are expected to meet at Chaoyang Park.
