Beijing suburbanites meet in sport games
The Beijing suburbanites sport meeting opens.

About one thousand farmers in suburbs of Beijing staged a sport meet on Saturday to show their passion for the forthcoming Olympic Games and enthusiasm in sport activities.

They competed in traditional sports and exercises such as martial arts, tag-of-war, shuttlecock kicking, relay race, basketball shooting, rope skipping and weight-carrying race. Lion and dragon dances as well as yangko folk dance brought about much bustle and excitement.

With the improvement of living conditions in recent years, Beijing suburbanites now have more time and energy to take part in physical exercises for the purpose of bodybuilding. Some eighty percent of villages have their own exercise equipment.

As one of the 28 events of the fourth Beijing 2008 Olympic Cultural Festival, which runs from June 23 to July 15, the sport meet was organized by the district government of Shunyi. The district, located in east Beijing, will host Olympic rowing-canoeing in 2008.

President of Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) Liu Qi and Beijing Mayor Wang Qishan attended the event.
