Updated: 2006-08-11 22:23 BEIJING - China has now fulfilled almost all the pre-conditions for successfully hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and is confident it can present a high-quality sports event in a uniquely Chinese way, said Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (BOCOG). Liu made the remark Friday when meeting with a visiting US Senate delegation led by Ted Stevens, president pro tempore of the US Senate. Liu, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), briefed the US senators on the 2008 Beijing Olympics preparation work, saying that preparations were well advanced and that a range of work objectives had been completed on schedule. According to Liu, China has learnt from the Olympic Games held in Athens, Sydney and Salt Lake City. He expressed his hope that the delegation's visit would help the American people to have a better understanding of Beijing and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Stevens congratulated Liu on the progress made in the preparation work, and said he believed that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be one of the best sports events in history. The US Senate delegation arrived in China on Monday for their third meeting with the National People's Congress (NPC), China's legislative body, under an interparliamentary conference mechanism. |
