NASCAR, the popular American stock car property, is veering north of the border to launch a new Canadian racing series.

The stock car racing giant announced Tuesday that it has purchased the CASCAR Canadian series and is set to sanction a new string of NASCAR-branded races in Canada.

The new series includes a multi-year sponsorship agreement with retailer Canadian Tire.

"NASCAR racing is a popular, growing sport in Canada, enjoyed by millions of passionate fans," Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR vice-president of racing operations, said in a media release.

"The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will help attract new Canadian fans and competitors and bring the excitement of NASCAR racing to new fans in Canada.

"We also recognize the tremendous history and heritage of CASCAR and welcome its fans and competitors into this exciting new series."

The new Canadian series is slated to debut in May 2007 with 10 to 12 races running until October.

The exact dates and locations on the schedule will be unveiled at a later date.

CASCAR, established in 1981, operated as a governing body and organizer for professional and amateur stock car racing in Canada. Its primary program was the 12-race CASCAR Super Series.
