LONDON, Nov 8 - Former England international Paul Gascoigne has been arrested in London on suspicion of assault, police sources said on Wednesday.

"Police were called at approximately 3:40 a.m. this morning by a man who alleged that he had been assaulted by another man at a club in South Kensington," Scotland Yard said in a statement.

"Following inquiries, a 39-year-old man was arrested at a separate club nearby at approx 4:15 a.m. on suspicion of ABH (Actual Bodily Harm)."

Midfielder Gascoigne made his name for home town club Newcastle United before moving to Tottenham Hotspur. He also played for Lazio, Rangers, Everton and Middlesbrough.

Gascoigne, who played 57 times for England, tried to embark on a coaching career at minor league club Kettering Town last year but left after just 39 days in charge amid drinking claims.

He has had several run-ins with the law since his football career went into decline in the late 1990s.
