Indonesian boxer Anis Dwi Mulya died in hospital where he was treated for injuries he got from a fight in a local boxing competition five days earlier, making him the 22nd casualty connected to the sports in the country since 1948, local press reported Wednesday.

Anis, 27, died at a hospital in Jakarta where he received treatment for internal bleedings in his head Tuesday evening, or five days after the junior-lightweight bout which umpire stopped at the sixth round at the request of his coach.

Doctors said he suffered epidural bleedings in the head and underwent two surgeries last Friday, reported Indonesian language Kompas newspaper.

"The thrombocyte level in his blood keeps dropping. It indicated that Anis didn't only suffer bleedings, but also another illness, very likely dengue," Dr. Tunggul Marpaung who led the surgery team on Anis was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, English daily The Jakarta Post reported at least 22 Indonesian boxers have died since 1948 as a result of injuries suffered in the ring.

The last victim was Jack Ryan, who died in 2004 after a bout in Central Java.
