JAKARTA - French football star Zinedine Zidane will visit Indonesia in July to promote the sport among children, the tour's sponsors said Thursday.

The three-time World Footballer of the Year will attend an international tournament for children sponsored by food manufacturer Danone during his July 6-8 visit.

"It is confirmed that Zidane will be visiting Indonesia on those dates but we are still discussing the agenda of his stay," Danone spokesman George Yudistira told AFP.

The trip coincides with the start of the Asian Cup, which Indonesia is co-hosting, on July 7.

Manchester United have been forced to cancel a tour match in Malaysia, another of the Asian Cup's four hosts, because it clashed with the July 7-29 tournament.

Indonesian Football Association chief Nugraha Besoes told state news agency Antara that Zidane would also likely visit football schools for children during his stay.

Football is gaining popularity in Indonesia although badminton is still the nation's favourite sport.

Indonesia will host the final of the Asian Cup, the region's biggest tournament, on July 29 in Jakarta.
