Kerr made the comment on TNT during the telecast of Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals in Cleveland. Kerr has been an analyst on the network's NBA telecasts for four years.

"I would like to say that I am going to take the general manager job in Phoenix," he said in a statement released by TNT.

He had kind words for fellow members of the TNT crew, Marv Albert and Doug Collins.

"I want to thank you guys and everybody in the truck and all the people in Atlanta for the wonderful experience," Kerr said. "I'm looking forward to my new opportunity, but I am going to miss you guys."

Kerr's comments confirmed reports on Thursday that he would take over Suns general manager duties from Mike D'Antoni, who will concentrate on coaching. Kerr, a close friend of Suns owner Robert Sarver, will hold the title of president and general manager.

In addition, David Griffin has announced he turned down a chance to become general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies and will remain with the Suns as vice president for basketball operations.

Turner Sports president David Levy issued a statement thanking Kerr for his work.

"The professional qualities that made Steve a successful player and analyst will help him succeed in his new role with the Phoenix Suns."

Kerr, who owns a small piece of the Suns, is to be officially introduced as general manager at a news conference in Phoenix in the coming week.

Kerr is a former University of Arizona star who was part of five championship teams -- in Chicago and San Antonio -- in 15 NBA seasons.
