Updated: 2009-04-28 11:46 NEW YORK – Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Niklas Backstrom of the Minnesota Wild and Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins were named Vezina Trophy finalists for the NHL's top netminder, the league said on Monday.
After nine years playing in Europe, Backstrom needed just three seasons with the Wild to establish himself as one of the league's best. The Finn finished third in goals against average (2.33) and shutouts (eight) while his 37 wins set a team record. Thomas led the NHL in goals against average (2.10) while posting a career-high 36 wins to help the Bruins to the Eastern Conference's best record. The winner will be announced on June 18 at the NHL awards show in Las Vegas. |
