Record 230 Million Video Streams Combined on Tencent for NBA All-Star Events
38.6 Million Viewers Tune in to CCTV-5 for First NBA All-Star Game Outside the United States
BEIJING, Feb. 22, 2016 – NBA All-Star 2016 in Toronto, Canada - the first NBA All-Star held outside the United States - registered significant records and increased fan consumption across digital, television, social and retail in China.
Below are highlights from NBA All-Star 2016:
NBA All-Star included a record 230 million video streams of All-Star events on Tencent throughout the week, an increase of more than four times over last year.
A total of 13.2 million live viewers watched NBA All-Star 2016 events on Tencent via computers and mobile devices, an increase of 223% over last year.
The 65th NBA All-Star Game was the most viewed game ever on Tencent, with 5.4 million viewers tuning in, up 55% over last year.
The NBA All-Star Celebrity Game presented by Mountain Dew attracted 2.2 million live viewers. Kris Wu became the first Chinese-born participant in the Celebrity Game and also served as a guest commentator for Tencent during Verizon Slam Dunk and All-Star Game.
CCTV-5's live coverage of the NBA All-Star Game reached 38.6 million viewers in China, up 12% over last year.
Viewership of State Farm All-Star Saturday Night and BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge in China was up 48% and 55% percent, respectively, over last year.
More than 1.05 billion impressions were generated on Sina Weibo using the #NBAALLSTARWEEKEND hashtag.
NBA Stores on Tmall.com, JD.com and WeChat set sales records for the week of NBA All-Star, exceeding last year's sales by 134%.
The 2016 NBA All-Star Game set a record for the most combined points in All-Star Game history with 369 points. Both the West and East teams broke the record for most points by one team in an All-Star Game, with the West setting a new record of 196.
As the first NBA All-Star held outside the US, NBA All-Star 2016 was aired and livestreamed by nine media partners in Greater China, including CCTV-5, BesTV, Tencent, GDTV, BTV, Videoland, Taiwan Mobile, Elta and NowTV. Along with its comprehensive coverage of the BBVA Compass Rising Star Challenge, State Farm All-Star Saturday Night and the 65th NBA All-Star Game, Tencent became the first Chinese media company to livestream the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game presented by Mountain Dew
Tencent enabled Chinese fans to vote via QQ for the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game MVP, Rising Stars Challenge MVP and NBA All-Star Game MVP. This marked the first time voting for the Celebrity Game MVP was open to fans outside of North America.
In addition, three players from the Chinese Basketball Association and one player from the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association were selected to participate in the second annual Basketball Without Borders Global Camp in Toronto. The camp consisted of the top 53 high school aged boy and girl players from 27 countries and territories. Players from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe had the opportunity to learn directly from NBA and FIBA players and coaches during the 3 day camp.
