SAO PAULO - Manchester City-bound striker Gabriel Jesus has claimed Brazilian football's highest individual honor by winning the Bola de Ouro, awarded to the best player in the country's Serie A championship.

The annual trophy, decided by Brazil's football journalists, was handed to the 19-year-old at a ceremony in Sao Paulo on Monday.

"It's a big thrill to be here but I owe it to my teammates," Jesus said. "I didn't dream of being here. It makes me very happy."

Jesus netted 12 goals in Brazil's Serie A championship despite his regular international commitments with Brazil's youth, Olympic and senior teams.

His performances helped Palmeiras claim their first Brazilian Serie A title in 22 years.

The 19-year-old will join City in January after the English club agreed to pay 27 million pounds for his signature in August.

Meanwhile Palmeiras coach Alexi Stival, better known as Cuca, was named coach of the year.
