SHENZHEN - Deni claimed Indonesia's second weightlifting gold medal after winning the men's 69kg competition at the 26th World University Games in Shenzhen on Monday.

The contest began with a tense snatch section that finished with the top five competitors all within 4kg of each other.

Deni and fellow Indonesian Triyatno, a Beijing Olympic bronze medallist, led the way with 143kg each.

South Korea's Won Jeong Sik was well placed at 2kg behind, with Artiom Pipa of Moldova and Xiao Minghua of China on 140kg.

Deni seized the advantage in the clean and jerk section, holding 173kg up in his opening lift before watching Triyatno sensationally fail to lift 174kg in all three of his attempts.

Won kept himself in the race by heaving 173kg and 177kg with his first and second clean and jerk lifts.

Deni responded by lifting 177kg with his next lift, with Won needing to lift a hefty 181kg in order to challenge for the gold medal. Despite his best effort, the South Korean could not hold the weight, handing the gold to Deni.

After failing with his final lift of 181kg, Deni finished with a combined total of 321kg, 3kg ahead of Won, who claimed the silver.

Mohamed Sultan won Egypt's first medal of the Games with a strong performance in the clean and jerk section, lifting a combined total of 312kg to take bronze.
