What a catch

In northeast China, ice fishing is an ancient tradition. The season usually runs throughout the freezing months of winter, from the end of December to just before Spring Festival. It is popular because the extreme temperatures mean the fish can be easily preserved and transported. Additionally, this unique method of fishing is now listed as an intangible cultural heritage. The fish is also an auspicious symbol for most Chinese. Many families will have a fish dish on their dining table at the start of the year to signify a bountiful year ahead.
