Quanzhou, Fujian province, was selected to represent China in the search for East Asia’s culture capital.

The selection was carried out in Beijing on Monday.

Standing out from nine other shortlisted cities, Quanzhou will represent China to host a variety of cultural activities along with its counterparts—South Korea’s Kwangju and Japan’s Yokohama for the title of East Asia’s culture capital next year.

A campaign jointly launched by Japan, South Korea and China, was organized to elect three cities representing each country for the purpose of promoting culture, communication and cooperation.

The campaign was initiated by the Ministry of Culture in March.
