Innocent man released after eight years detention

A man was found innocent and released on Tuesday after spending eight years in a detention center for killing a man in Zhijin County, Guizhou province, the Beijing Times reported.

In 1999, a friend of Zhang Guangxiang was killed and after four years local police detained Zhang as a suspect because he had not attended the victim's funeral. Zhang admitted the crime but later withdrew his confession. He was released on bail in 2004 but rearrested in 2006. His third trial in Guizhou Higher People's Court found him not guilty and released him on April 29.

A cousin of Zhang told the newspaper that he did not attend the funeral because he wanted to avoid the 20-yuan "fenzi" money which has to be given to the deceased's family according to local custom. Zhang was in financial difficulties at the time.
